Where is Jersey you might well ask? We could not agree in the office what it was … a county, island, or the largest of the Channel Islands? None of us were aware that it is actually a State.
State of Jersey… Just reading these two words tells you that it is going to be fascinating but serious and orderly!
So where is Jersey? Well, it is between England and France and as such it is the most southerly Island of the British Isles. At 14 miles from the coast of France, you can be forgiven for thinking that it is more French than British with some 100 miles from the nearest point in the UK. Having arrived to St Helier on my first morning I was greeted with a clear blue sky and calm blue sea, what magical scenery! London was so far in the past with its grey skies and miserable drizzle that always reminds me of bad plumbing!
My first appointment was not due for another couple of hours and I have decided to have my first espresso of the day. I always judge new places by their espresso (and shoe shops). It serves and St Helier was not going to be any different, however it got my approval on its first round and it stayed that way for the rest of my stay. Not one single disappointing espresso! (Don’t bother about the shoes though).
St Helier is tiny and very friendly on your feet. It is packed with beauty, architecture, artistic heritage and a strong sense of local identity. I was so totally transfixed with this place. No graffiti, no litter, and wherever I went people were so polite towards me that I was questioning my self in case I had met them before but could not remember!
And if you like fish as much as I do, you are definitively in the right place! I bypassed all the restaurants and headed every lunch time to a fish market where inside you will find not one but two fish restaurants, fish does not get fresher than this, believe me, sheer joy…
After all that I don’t need to tell you how much I enjoyed Jersey and how sad I was to leave this beautiful State after my week there.
Oh, I almost forgot…my week was extremely successful, so much so that I will be going back to this tranquil place next spring.
