The Oxford & Cambridge University Boat Race

The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends – Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow schoolfriend Charles Wordsworth, who was at Oxford. On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day, where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match. Last year, a two page feature article in a national newspaper carried the following headline: “Are you allergic to bread?” The basis of the article was that one in three people has intolerance to wheat, which causes anything from bloating to depression. In fact, the headline was both alarmist and misleading. St Patrick's Day 2008

Everyone loves the traditional celebration that makes up St Patrick’s Day. This event celebrates all things Irish, with laughter and fun and not forgetting Guinness! This year, the St Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on March 16. The Parade will see marching bands from Ireland and the UK, community groups, sports cubs, schools and street theatre take to the streets of central London for a fun filled family spectacle. Where I come from…

Almost one month ago exactly, I moved myself and all my worldly possessions to London… (Thank you British Airways for your generous baggage allowance). I’m really enjoying it here, but it doesn’t quite feel like home yet. Home for me, has always been Canada. Toronto, to be more specific. Toronto is not known for its beautiful architecture, exciting nightlife or cutting-edge fashion, but rather for the fact that it’s clean and safe with a lot of parks with trees.
